MAKING a Murderer on Netflix explores the complex case of Steven Avery who arrested and sentenced for the murder of Teresa Halbach.
Bobby Dassey is a family member of Avery’s who was a main player in the trial proceedings.
What happened to Teresa Halbach?
In 2005, photographer Teresa Halbach disappeared without a trace.
She was last known to have met Avery at his home on the grounds of his Auto Salvage business to take a picture of a minivan he was trying to sell.
Her vehicle was found part-hidden in his salvage yard and bloodstains recovered from its interior matched Avery’s DNA.
The young woman’s charred bone fragments were later found in a burn pit near Avery’s home.
He was arrested and charged with Halbach’s murder, kidnapping, sexual assault, and mutilation of a corpse on November 11, 2005.
On June 6, 2007, Avery was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of early release after being found guilty of Halbach’s murder.
Who is Bobby Dassey?
Bobby Dassey is Stephen Avery’s nephew.
Bobby was one of the key witnesses used by the prosecution in the trial against his uncle.
In the trial, he testified that he saw Halbach taking photos on Avery’s property but did not see her again after she went into Avery’s trailer.
He said that that Halbach’s car was still on the property when he left to go hunting, but the RAV-4 was gone by the time he returned.
Bobby has never been charged with any crime related to Halbach’s death.
How is he connected to Steven Avery?
Steven Avery is serving a life sentence at Wisconsin’s Waupun Correctional Institution ever since he was found guilty of murder in 2007.
He and his nephew Brendan Dassey are serving life in prison for the 2005 murder of Teresa Halbach.
Avery argued that his conviction was based on planted evidence and false testimony.
The prosecution claimed Avery invited Dassey into his home to sexually assault and torture her.
It was alleged they then took her into the garage to shoot her in the head before burning her body and attempting to destroy the charred remains.
Avery’s lawyer Kathleen Zellner is filing a new motion claiming Bobby planted the car of missing photographer Teresa Halbach at the Avery Salvage Yard reported Channel 3000.
Zellner is filing the motion citing a new witness who came forward with information.
Thomas Sowinski claims he was delivering newspapers to the Avery Salvage Yard during the early morning hours of November 5, 2005 when he “saw a shirtless Bobby Dassey and an unidentified older man pushing a dark blue RAV-4 down Avery Road toward the junkyard.”
Sowinski then said Bobby tried to block him from exiting the property, but he drove into a ditch to get around him and was able to leave.
He then went on to claim that he called the Manitowoc Sherriff’s Office to report his encounter with Bobby, but was told by an officer, “we already know who did it.”
The motion was filed by Zellner in her attempt to prove a “Brady violation,” claiming the prosecution suppressed evidence that would have been in the defense’s favor.
