PATRICIA Alatorre was last seen on July 1 before she was reported missing.
Police have now confirmed a sad end to the search for the 13-year-old after Armando Cruz, 24, was arrested and charged in connection with her murder.
Her death came unexpectedly to friends and loved ones.
Who is Armando Cruz?
Armando Cruz is a 24-year-old man from Inglewood, California.
Police identified him as a person of interest over the weekend and he was taken in for questioning.
Following the interview, he was arrested on July 6 for his alleged involvement in Alatorre’s disappearance.
Cruz faces 18 felonies and one misdemeanor.
The charges include first-degree murder, kidnap to commit rape, rape by force, oral copulation with person under the age of 14, and sexual assault of a juvenile.
He is being held on no bail, according to the Kern County Jail website.
Cruz is due in court on Tuesday and is yet to enter a plea.
Who is Patricia Alatorre and what happened to her?
Patricia Alatorre of Bakersfield, California is described as a 5-foot tall, 90-pound Hispanic female with brown hair and brown eyes.
She attended McKee Middle school was remembered as “sassy, social, and smart” by her science teacher Jacquelyn Johnson.
On July 1, Alatorre was reported missing.
Police said she was last seen on Crescent Ridge Street near Hosking Avenue & Wible Road in Bakersfield at 11.30pm.
At first, authorities said it appeared that Alatorre had run away.
“She did make a makeshift person in the bed. That’s not like her,” Alatorre’s mother Clara told KGET.
She continued: “She put her pajamas in the head part to make it look like somebody was in the bed, but she locked her door.”
Her mom added that Alatorre had never run away before and claimed there have not been any issues in the family.
Police later found surveillance video showing an older model white truck leaving the area at the same time and location Alatorre was last seen.
Detectives said they believed Alatorre got in the truck, which they say belonged to Cruz.
Police were able to track down the truck and seized the vehicle.
How long was she missing for?
Alatorre vanished on July 1, 2020, near Wible Road. and Hosking Avenue.
Police ended the search for her disappearance on July 6.
She was missing for about 6 days in total.
On Monday evening, about 300 people held a vigil for Alatorre outside her home in south Bakersfield.
Family members described Alatorre as someone who aspired to drive dirt bikes and loved fishing.
Where was she found dead?
Due to an ongoing investigation, police have released few details about Alatorre’s death, including whether her remains had been located or the manner in which she died.
“Any investigation involving a child as a victim and particularly when there is a death involved, it is especially horrific not just as police officers, but also as people that have families,” Robert Pair, spokesman for Bakersfield Police said.
“I cannot imagine what Patricia’s family is going through right now.”
