Who is Marco Rubio?

Rubio is a Republican member of the US Senate from the state of Florida first elected in 2010.

In April 2015, he announced he would be campaigning for president in the 2016 election but dropped out after coming in second to Donald Trump in his home state.

After working as a city commissioner for West Miami in the 90s, he was elected to the 111th district in the Florida House of Representatives in 2000.

He was eventually elected as speaker of the House in November 2006 and was Speaker for two years.

After leaving the Florida legislature in 2008 due to term limits, Rubio taught at Florida International University before running for Senate.

His influence on Latin American policy has led him to been described as a “virtual secretary of state for Latin America”.

Rubio is an “average Republican member of Congress”, meaning he will vote with the Republican Party on the majority of bills.

What is Marco Rubio’s net worth?

Rubio has an estimated net worth of over $559,000

When running for the Oval Office in 2016, Rubio was the least affluent of all the GOP candidates as the only one who was not a millionaire or billionaire and used that to relate to his constituents.

Rubio didn’t pay off the last $100,000 of his student debt until he signed a book deal for $800,000 to publish his 2012 memoir, An American Son, telling his story of growing up the son of two Cuban immigrants.

However, at the same time he also spent his money on extravagant purchases 24-foot speed boat that cost the same as his book earnings.

Rubio’s money management skills were enough of a concern to be flagged by Mitt Romney’s campaign when he was being vetted as a potential running mate.

Rubio has owned up to his mistakes: using personal credit cards to pay for his campaigns, appointing his wife, Jeanette, as a treasurer of a political action committee, and using the party money to attend a family reunion.

He has said that due to his parents immigrant status and limited funds growing up he didn’t learn money management skills and has had to learn through trial and error.

What was Marco Rubio’s upbringing?

Rubio was born in Miami to Mario Rubio Reina, a bartender, and Oriales Rubio, a hotel maid.

He has three siblings, Mario, Barbara, and Veronica.

Both of his parents applied for U.S. citizenship and were naturalized in 1975 while some of Rubio’s other relatives were admitted to the U.S. as refugees.

Rubio has said that growing up his family had “little money to manage”.

He earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in political science from the University of Florida in 1993 and attended the University of Miami School of Law in 1996.

While studying law, Rubio interned for U.S. Representative Ileana Ros-Lehtinen and worked on Republican senator Bob Dole’s 1996 presidential campaign.

In April 1998, Rubio was elected to a seat as city commissioner for West Miami beginning his political career.
