SHOCKING footage shows the moment a man allegedly tried to rape a woman on a subway platform before being chased away by onlookers.
Jose Reyes, 31, is accused of pushing the woman to the ground and climbing on top of her as she waiting for a train at 11am on Saturday in New York City.
He was caught on Sunday when a facial recognition program matched his face to a mugshot of him from a previous arrest earlier this year for criminal mischief.
Reyes’ 25-year-old alleged victim said she first noticed him when they were on the same train and she noticed him smoking something.
She told police she got off the train in an attempt to get away from him and he followed her onto the platform at the East 63rd Street subway station on the Upper East Side.
Reyes, 31, continued to follow her before pushing her, punching her and climbing on top of her, officials said.
NYPD Chief Rodney Harrison said it was a “heinous” crime.
Reyes faces charges of attempted rape and assault.
He had been spotted smoking hookah before the alleged attack, Harrison said.
He allegedly had several narcotics in his possession and had been arrested several times before this attempted attack.
Tips reported to Crime Stoppers helped cops find Reyes for the arrest, cops said.
A cell phone video taken by a bystander allegedly shows Reyes on top of the woman, seemingly attempting to force himself onto her.
Reyes then appears to exchange words with somebody out of shot, and gets up off the woman and walks away.
The footage, sent out by cops, is muted — but NBC’s Myles Miller reported that the woman is heard screaming and yells at the crowd to get off her in the original video.
The victim suffered mild injuries and refused medical attention, according to the NYPD.
“Thank you to all involved in the investigation/apprehension. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the victim of this heinous unprovoked attack,” police commissioner Dermot Shea tweeted.
Viewers of the video expressed their anger at the individual who filmed the alleged attack.
“This p****d me off on so many levels. The one recording should also kick his ass and save her. What is WRONG WITH PEOPLE!!!!,” one Twitter user wrote.
Another added: “Again another video of a man assaulting a woman while people stand there filming. If you need to film it, set the camera up, so you can film yourself kicking this dudes ass.”
The violent crime comes during another brutal weekend of crime in the city.
Shawn Elliot, 49, was stabbed in the torso in the Bronx around 11 p.m. Saturday and died in Lincoln Hospital. Another victim was also stabbed but remains in stable condition, according to cops.
In Brooklyn, cops responding to a 911 call found a 24-year-old Elijah Mims unconscious with multiple gunshot wounds to his face and body inside of a dark colored sedan. He was taken to Woodhull hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
In East Harlem, an unresponsive 25-year-old man was found with a gunshot wound to the head.
