MATH teacher Dorothy Veracka, who sent a minor student nude pictures and told him she was a “bad girl”, managed to avoid jail time with a suspended sentence.
Veracka, 42, must now register as a sex offender, and not have any unsupervised contact with children under the age of 16 or have contact with the victim, as was ordered in court Monday.
The Massachusetts teacher’s sentence of two-and-a-half years in prison was suspended for two years with probation.
“She is sick,” the family of the 15-year-old wrote in a statement read by prosecutors Monday, MassLive.com reported.
The former Nashoba High School teacher – who is a mother of three children herself – pleaded guilty to a charge of distributing obscene matter to a minor – and charges of possessing child pornography and posing or exhibiting a child in the state of nudity were dropped.
Court records show Veracka sent nude pictures of herself to the minor student between September 2018 and March 2019, MassLive reported.
The teacher reportedly began talking to the student on Google Classroom, but wanted to move the conversation to Snapchat because she knew the other platform was monitored, police said.
Search warrant affidavits said during one conversation with the teen, Veracka told him she knew what she was doing was wrong and she was a “bad girl,” MassLive reported.
She groomed the child, and police said she asked him for pictures and he sent some.
Authorities said Veracka also whispered obscene things in the child’s ear as she touched him on the shoulder, MassLive reported.
Assistant District Attorney Paige Barton said in court that the pictures of herself that were sent to the student were found on her cell phone, and she admitted to sending them.
The teen also took screenshots of the photos Veracka sent, police said.
School officials came under fire after it was revealed the principal, Paul Di Domenico, was allegedly told about the pictures in June 2019 – three months before an unnamed parent was told about the pictures by a female friend of the victim and notified police, MassLive reported.
The principal was placed on administrative leave after the claim arose he knew about the pictures.
Veracka was still working at the school when the unnamed parent notified cops of the pictures, and was placed on administrative leave on September 30, WBZ reported.
The school declined to comment on the matter.
“This is an ongoing personnel matter that I can’t comment on at this time,” district superintendent Brooke Clenchy said in a statement to WBZ.
Veracka’s lawyer blamed her actions on alcohol.
