AS the daughter of one of the world’s most famous women, Lourdes Leon was always going to get plenty of attention.
But the eldest child of US superstar Madonna has come into her own lately.
While the Material Girl is still out to shock — most recently dyeing her hair pink, posing with marijuana and showing off her latest toyboy — model Lourdes, 24, is more subtle.
Yet, dare we say it, she is quietly stealing the limelight from mum.
Pictures emerged this week of Lourdes chilled and showing off her athletic figure as she pranced in the surf on holiday in Mexico.
She dazzled in a neon-yellow bikini top and black thong while enjoying the break with her boyfriend, American skate-boarder and photographer Jonathan Puglia, last month.
The previous day fans went wild for a raunchy shot of her modelling Juicy Couture briefs, posted on the brand’s Instagram site.
It showed Lola, as she is known, with her curvy rear to the camera and a sultry look in her eye.
She is part of the launch of the Juicy Couture and Parade underwear collection, along with American plus-size model Ashley Graham, 33.
Lola is Madge’s daughter with her Cuban dancer ex, Carlos Leon.
And her new-found confidence is in stark contrast to New York Fashion Week in 2016, when the then 19-year-old looked awkward on the front row as Madonna accidentally exposed a nipple.
Unlike her mother, who loves to court publicity, Lola, who speaks French, Italian and Spanish, remains an enigma. She refuses interviews, Hollywood parties do not interest her and it was reported last summer that she does not have an agent.
Fashion magazine W labelled her the “quietest IT girl”.
As a young teenager, Lola would reportedly cringe at her mum’s outrageous outfits, telling her: “Oh Mom, you’re not leaving the house like that!”
Along with Madonna and her other five kids, Lola was said to have followed a macrobiotic diet in which sweets, dairy products and salt were all banned.
TV was also a no-no and Lola is said to have only got her first iPhone at the age of 15.
Despite living in the lap of luxury, Madonna made sure Lola did chores around the home and she never dared leave clothes on the floor.
The Like A Virgin singer said: “She has to earn all of her clothes back by being tidy, picking up things in her room, making her bed in the morning. She wears the same outfit every day to school until she learns her lesson.”
But it was never a case of pleading Papa Don’t Preach because dad Carlos — who split with Madonna five months after Lola’s birth but remained involved in her life — was the lenient one. He said: “I’m probably a bad dad when it comes to disciplining her.”
Instead, it was Mum who was the stern parent.
So Madonna “wasn’t very happy” when her then 15-year-old daughter was caught smoking. She said: “I don’t approve of anyone smoking cigarettes, most of all my daughter.”
That seemed to have little effect, though, because in 2014 Lola was caught on camera having a crafty puff on a family yachting break. And despite Mum’s talk, Madonna posted a shot of herself with a suspicious-looking roll-up in her mouth and a tray of marijuana in hand while celebrating her 62nd birthday in August in Jamaica.
Last year, though, she proudly told Vogue magazine how “insanely talented” Lola was.
She said: “I’m green with envy because she’s incredible at everything she does — she’s an incredible dancer, she’s a great actress, she plays the piano beautifully, she’s way better than me in the talent department.”
Lola was offered a small part in Harry Potter And The Half-Blood Prince in 2007 but turned it down on her mum’s insistence she should have a normal childhood.
Around that time, Madonna revealed Lola’s ambition to be an actress and said: “I’m fine with it as long as she finishes school and takes it seriously.”
Seven years later, Lola enrolled at the University of Michigan’s School of Music, Theatre and Dance, which Madonna attended in the Seventies but dropped out of.
To begin with, the famous teen was conscious of keeping a low profile, and travelled back home to New York every weekend. But she soon got into the swing of student life.
One source told gossip site Page Six at the time: “Lola takes after her mother in many ways. She has a magnetic personality. She likes to let her hair down and party.”
At the same time, Lola was also acting as a go-between in Madonna and former husband Guy Ritchie’s custody battle for her younger half brother Rocco, now 20.
When the children were younger, Madonna would take them on tour with her. But Lola would always “draw the line at keeping her own space and sanity,” according to Matthew Rettenmund, author of Encyclopedia Madonnica 20.
As a pupil at New York’s LaGuardia High School of Music and Performing Arts, she met Little Women actor Timothee Chalamet, also now 24, who she dated for a year before they split in 2014.
She has been spotted with a couple of other men since, and has been linked with Jonathan, who she has had an on-off relationsip with since 2017.
This week, Madonna was in the news for getting her first tattoo, showing the initials of her six children on her left wrist.
In contrast, Lola has several inkings, including “Mom” on the fingers of her right hand, “Dad” on her left, “Mercy” for her adopted sister at the top of her left arm and an interlinked “RR” on her left fore-arm, thought to be for Rocco.
She also has a pierced nose, tongue and belly button — and proudly displays unshaven armpits, which were in full view on her recent break in Mexico. Aged just 13, she launched a teen fashion range with Madonna, acting as its creative director.
Natural beauty Lola appeared in a perfume ad for Stella McCartney in 2016, and two years later made her catwalk debut in a daring seashell bra and distressed jeans that revealed her hairy legs.
Last year at a Miami fashion show she wore a tie-dye bodice dress and passionately kissed a woman before stripping to a nude thong and pasties as she joined in with other models’ writhing bodies in a simulated orgy scene to promote Spanish brand Desigual.
Also in 2019 she posed for designer label Miu Miu with Maya Hawke, daughter of Hollywood A-listers Uma Thurman and Ethan Hawke, and followed in her mum’s footsteps by promoting Jean Paul Gaultier’s urban brand Supreme.
The French style king, now 68, was responsible for Madonna’s most famous outfit, the conical-boobed pink corset she wore on her 1990 Blond Ambition Tour.
But the fashion world has now cottoned on to Lola’s potential and the spotlight is on daughter, instead of mother.
