Late Son strike gives Spurs bragging rights after lively pre-season friendly

Spurs have shown they can still do the business without Harry Kane as they put in a solid defensive display in front of their fans to beat Arsenal in a narrow 1-0 win.

Nuno Espirito Santo emerged victorious in his first north London derby as Spurs boss and although it’s only pre-season, it will feel no less sweet for Spurs supporters to get one up on their bitter rivals.

The best moment of the match, however, was when Spurs and Arsenal fans united in showing their appreciation for England winger Bukayo Saka, who was given an ovation as he came off the bench in the second half.

Arsenal created a number of decent chances through the directness of Smith-Rowe and Pepe, but Spurs remained compact and difficult to break down, offering a real threat on the counter-attack through Son and Lucas.

It was a solid performance from Eric Dier and co that made the difference in the end, as the Spurs defence effectively stifled Arsenal’s attacking threat and gave their forwards a strong platform to build on.

It’s not all doom and gloom for Mikel Arteta’s men, however, as Ben White and Albert Lokonga both played well and Saka looked as bright as ever after his introduction, with Arsenal unlucky not to equalise.

Both managers will now have a far better idea of the starting line-ups they’ll put out in their opening Premier League fixtures, as Arsenal take on Brentford on Friday night and Spurs take on Man City on Sunday.

With much movement still likely to happen in the transfer window over the next few weeks, it’s likely that both sides will make further additions to their squads, whilst some players will also be on their way out.

It remains to be seen whether Harry Kane will be one of them, but even if he is, Spurs have shown they may well be able to cope without the England captain if he does depart for Manchester City.
