A MANHUNT is underway for a gunman who shot a man and then fired on a police officer inside the popular Texas shopping mall on Friday night.
Houston Police Chief Troy Finner warned the outstanding shooter directly in a press conference: “We’re coming after you – it’s plain and simple.”
The Galleria Mall and neighboring residential streets were put on lockdown just before 8pm on Friday when a man was shot in the leg near the food court.
An off-duty Houston Police Officer responded in the parking lot and alerted the suspect, who Finner confirmed unloaded more bullets.
“When the suspect saw the officer, he immediately fired upon the officer,” Finner explained during a press conference outside the emptied mall.
“The officer took cover and fired back at the suspect a few times.
“He’s not sure if he struck the suspect or not.”
The off-duty officer who engaged the alleged gunman managed wasn’t hurt.
“Thank god he’s not injured,” Finner said of the cop who he described as a five-year veteran of the force.
SUSPECT ON THE RUN
The victim who was shot by the suspect in the garage is recovering at a local hospital.
“We’ll find out what’s going with him once we speak with him,” said Finner.
The gunman remains on the run.
He is described as being a black man between the ages of 20 to 25, wearing a white T-shirt and black pants and carrying a European-style crossbody bag strapped across his shoulders.
Finner started to lash out at the senseless violence at the family attraction.
“The Galleria – it just doesn’t make any sense,” the top cop said, adding that the majority of Houstonians are good people.
But he admitted some cause trouble.
“Just like this knucklehead tonight,” he said.
“And I’m calling him a knucklehead, I want to say something else. It’s really frustrating.
“You got kids and families in the mall you shooting somebody?”
Then he warned the gunman that he won’t be running for long.
“We’re coming after you it’s plain and simple,” Finner said.
The mall was locked down for a few hours as officers searched for the suspect, who they believe is no longer in the area.
He’s also not somewhere in the mall.
“He’s no longer here,” said Finner.
