SAVED By the Bell star Dustin Diamond shared a final heartbreaking picture from his hospital bed before losing his battle with lung cancer
Dustin’s close friend Dan Block confirmed the tragic news to The Sun that the 44-year-old had passed away on Monday.
Dan, who flew in to be by his bedside this morning, told The Sun: “We thought he had five months or something.
“He was getting ready to go into the hospice today.
“I was there, by his bed. He didn’t say anything. He wasn’t in a position to talk. He was laboring to breathe really bad. We’re all so shocked.”
The news was initially broke by TMZ, who shared one of the last photographs of Diamond in a hospital bed.
Diamond’s spokesman, Roger Paul, said in a statement: “Dustin did not suffer. He did not have to lie submerged in pain. For that, we are grateful.”
Fellow Saved By the Bell cast members have paid tribute to the star following the devastating news.
The news comes just hours after The Sun reported that the star’s illness was terminal.
The Saved By The Bell star, who found out he had stage four cancer last month, had been told he had anything from a few weeks to a year or two left.
Dustin – who played lovable Screech Powers in the teen sitcom – had told pals his last wishes were to meet his idol Justin Chancellor, the British bassist from heavy metal band Tool, and visit the Star Wars exhibit at Disney World, Florida.
Tragically the rocker never got to fulfill Dustin’s final wish.
“I knew if we were going to pull off a miracle, we had to do it quickly but sadly we weren’t quick enough,” Dan said.
Before his death, Dan told The Sun: “We do not have any specific timelines, but we know that Dustin needs a miracle to overcome the small cell carcinoma he’s been diagnosed with.”
“He was told weeks to five months is the average but a small percentage of people have lived one to two years with it being stage four.
“We are hoping that he is one of the people to outlive the odds and that we get as much time with him as possible.”
The TV actor was rushed to a hospital in Florida with “pain all over his body” in January.
The actor’s team confirmed the cancer diagnosis on his Facebook page, writing: “At this time we can confirm that Dustin does have cancer.
“Dustin will disclose more information once it is available and a plan moving forward is made.”
Last month, Dan, who met Dustin when he hired him to star in commercials for his insurance business, revealed how tragic Dustin was afraid to seek medical help earlier in case people made fun of him.
Dan said he had a “huge lump” on his neck for some time – but tragically put off going to the hospital in case people took photos and posted them online.
“I know that the reason he didn’t get help is because when he goes out people take pictures, put it on the internet and say not nice things about him,” Dan said.
“He’s subject to public ridicule all the time and it sucks. People need to know he is a human.”
Dan also asked Dustin’s fans to send letters and cards to his office and he’ll go deliver them to Dustin in hospital in Florida.
“We are accepting letters and cards from fans and then we’ll take them down to Dustin. We have a team ready.
“I know a lot of people do love Dustin, but he doesn’t want to look online at the moment because he sees all the negative comments.
“I think it would mean a lot to him and really help him at this time.”
Dustin’s rep Roger Paul previously told The Sun: “I’d like to ask everybody to keep Dustin in their thoughts and prayers.”
Dustin is survived by his ex-wife, Jennifer Misner.
